I read this with no context about the characters or places, but everything was introduced in a way that didn't leave me confused and the story was captivating even for someone new to the setting. If you like redemption arcs, you'll love this book! I really enjoyed the way the story started with a literal scale to weigh one's sins, and in a more symbolic way that theme carried on through the entire story. The weight of one's sins versus the extent of someone's kindness and forgiveness. Having the story told from a villain's point of view, yet making it this heartwarming takes a lot of skill, and Alizrak did it beautifully. I think it carries an important message too. Are you willing to give someone a second chance, even if they don't deserve it? Can you forgive the past if you see the person has changed? The focus of the story is between Karzoug and someone who has suffered greatly from his actions in the past, but there are some fun and interesting interactions with other characters too that I really enjoyed. And some really emotional moments. The story also feels natural even while it stays true to the rules of the game. Definitely worth reading, especially if you like complex characters and villains that aren't just evil for the sake of being evil. I certainly enjoyed and I'm looking forward to seeing more from Alizrak in the future!
