100 Books To Find Across The Inner Sea

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In many fantasy settings, books are considered something of a rarity. Even if the general populace is considered literate (which isn't always a given), books tend to be thought of as a luxury good enjoyed only by nobles, scholars and the occasional wizard.

Golarion, however, has active printing presses all over the setting... as such, books are everywhere!

We've seen all kinds of examples of this across the setting, from the gothic romances of Ustalav-born author Ailson Kindler, to the regular publications put out by the Pathfinder Society. So, whether someone is on a long caravan drive, a journey by ship or just unwinding with a pipe down at the local pub, it's entirely possible they're doing so with the aid of a good book. However, if you're looking to add some extra flavor to your game, consider sliding some of the following volumes into your next Pathfinder game.

As a final note, while many of these books are merely amusing set dressing, some of them might contain information relevant to your campaign's plot, the area of the world your party is traveling through, and so on. However, because there are so many different games one might use this setting for (Pathfinder Classic, Pathfinder Second Edition, Savage Worlds, etc.), no official bonuses are listed for a given book. Instead, Game Masters are encouraged to use their discretion, and to provide a bonus they find appropriate for a given situation.

Here are some sample results:

  • The Glorious Endeavor: The island of Hermea in the Steaming Sea has long been an experiment attempting to determine what would happen if the best and brightest that humanity had to offer were kept safe from war, suffering and deprivation. Supposedly authored by the dragon Mengkare himself, the volume is eloquent, insightful and even hopeful in its tone. Those who can read between the lines of the book, which is written in the language of dragons, say there's a kind of desperation to it as well... as if the author were trying to convince themselves, as well as the reader, of the justice of this experiment.
  • The Lion's Quiet Roar: A series of books that are more popular in Taldor than anywhere else, several of these volumes have been adapted into stage plays seen in a variety of houses across the nation. Each story features a member of the elite troops of the Lion Blades who is only referred to as the Lion. Whether the agent is the same in every tale, or different members of this elite force step into the title, is a matter of rather heated debate... as is the matter of precisely who writes these books. They come out much too quickly to have only a single author, for example, but whether they're flights of fancy, or true deeds of the Lion Blades told from behind the mask of a pen name, none can truly say. Whatever the answer, though, there are always lines of people ready to snatch up a copy for themselves when a new tale arrives.
  • The Secrets of The First Vault: A book that claims to teach the secrets of buying and bartering, the author claims that this book can turn anyone into a merchant prince if they simply follow the principles and strategies that it lays out. Though said to be divinely inspired by Abadar himself, the advice is so simple as to be nearly insulting. "Buy at a lower price than you sell," "Do not pay bribes, as they give the immoral power over you," and, "Always smile, people buy a merchant as often as they do their wares," are just some examples of what one might find between these covers. Perhaps the most insightful lesson the book shares is, "People want to purchase hope, and a story," which just might explain how the book keeps selling copies even years after it first came on the market.
  • Wisdom of The Three: There are dozens of tales throughout the Land of The Linnorm Kings that speak of those destined to slay a linnorm meeting three hooded women. While the prophecies these three women spoke were always cryptic, this book by the chronicler Ardan Sunhair offers interpretations of the words of these strange, fey creatures. These interpretations are then presented as a guide for living one's life in the footsteps of the linnorm kings of old. While there is a great deal of debate over Sunhair's readings of the prognostications and their true meaning, there are also many raiders and ring givers who live their lives by the insights and philosophies expounded on in this text.
  • The Palatine Way: The Eldritch Order of the Palatine Eye is rarely seen in the history of Golarion unless one knows how to read between the lines. Known primarily for their opposition to the adherents of the Whispering Way, this book supposedly contains the secrets of how to slay every kind of undead that walks across the skin of the world. This includes the most powerful of undead creatures; the liches that so many of the order's foes seek to transform themselves into.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
