Total Party Kon special: Big F@#*ing Greatswords is Pay What You Want for a limited time.

Pathfinder 2nd edition is great at covering a wide range of character fantasies, with the weapon trait system giving noticeable differences with different weapons. However, there is a popular fantasy weapon that isn’t quite represented well, colossal weapons. Sometimes called ultra-greatswords, BFS, fullblades, oversized weapons, or even “big fuckoff anime swords.”

The colossal weapon has been a staple of high fantasy since 1990 with the launch of Kentaro Miura’s seminal manga Berserk. Since then, many fantasy series like Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Dark Souls, and Inuyasha, feature heroes with colossal blades that cause tremendous damage when they connect.

While there is still the Giant Instinct Barbarian, restricting a weapon group to one subclass is a bit of a letdown for some players for those who don’t want that specific fantasy. The options provided in Big F@#*ing Greatswords are designed to have immense power with significant downsides to offset it, encouraging a playstyle of single decisive blows instead of rapid slashes. This book introduces 7 weapons, 4 new weapon traits, and 6 class feats, a critical specializations for the 3 new weapon groups these weapons belong to.

This concepts in this book are really fun, but mechanically it leaves a bit to be desired. Weapon that's hard to wield but devastating is a cool idea, but you only gain a small amount of damage and the penalties are very steep, especially the MAP penalties and their bulk. Overwhelming is also strange in how it scales (or doesn't, making it potentially much stronger at low levels).

I still think the book is worth a buy, especially since it's at a good price, but it feels like something GMs and players will have to workshop a bit. My players loved the idea, but kind of quickly decided the design was too conservative and they'd be better off with regular weapons instead. In their words, reflex penalty, a speed penalty, an extra 4 bulk, and losing their second attack just didn't feel worth doing one extra damage.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree with pretty much most of your points, a lot of these ideas are going to be tweaked or toned down in the 2.0 release. I have a much better handle on the system now, so there are definitely a lot of things I would do differently today.

I noticed none of these have the Reach trait. Even the glaive, when the base games version of the glaive does. Is that an oversight or implied for all weapons included?

Guts in Berserk seems to use his sword with reach at times, so calling that manga as a source of inspiration I'm hoping it's just an oversight.

The Glaive option has the Lunging trait that lets them attack at range with some limitations, but overall the lack of reach was mainly a balance concern, an early draft had them give range and it felt excessive. I have plans to work out a better compromise in the 2.0 update, but I'm treading carefully to make sure I don't make these weapons the dominant option.

I have exactly 2.50 available to me at the moment, and this is just grabbing enough of a description/title to spend it on. Looking forward to reading it.

As promised, I bought and read this. As a contributor myself, I cannot rate it, but if I could it'd be 5 stars for sure. It's awesome, balanced, and I will absolutely be including these as options in my own games going forward. I seriously laughed out loud reading meteor blade. A few minor spelling errors, but nothing that makes it confusing or unreadable. Simply amazing, thank you for this content.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
