Living clandestinely among Golarion's ancestries, kitsune make formidable foes and canny heroes. Kitsune of Golarion unlocks the full potential of this ancestry, detailing kitsune from every corner of the globe. An expansion on Lost Omens Ancestry Guide penned by the same authors who pen the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the following is just some of the content you'll find within Kitsune of Golarion:

  • An in-depth look at kitsune ethnic groups from across Golarion, including Arcadia, Avistan, Tian Xia, Casmaron, Garund, and even the Crown of the World. Each ethnic group includes a detailed look at traditions and celebrations favored by those kitsune, as well as their culture, history, and shapechanging abilities.
  • Reforged Kitsune rules designed to adjust several kitsune ancestry abilities, feats, and heritages in order to smooth the player experience for kitsune PCs.
  • New heritages and ancestry feats for kitsune characters.
  • New worn magic items called noh masks that allow shapechangers to assume new forms.
  • New consumable items called foxbrews that invoke potent transmutations with a kick once their effects end.
  • Two new archetypes: the Noh Mask Master and the Kyubi Scion.
  • And much more!

I like a lot of what's in here, especially the reforging of Kitsune's Change Shape, since the Paizo version is very lacking.

However some of the options are flatly superior in power to official content, especially the Nine-tailed Scion Archetype, which grants the benefits of a spellcasting dedication and the basic spellcasting benefits in a single second level dedication feat, and allows access to Expert spellcasting at level 10 instead of 12.

As a GM, I'm always wary of third-party content for exactly this reason: there is very nice, balanced, and flavorful material in this pdf, but sprinkled throughout are options that introduce a good bit of power creep.

Kitsune Guile and Startling Shapechange are pretty over-the-top in power level as well. Leaping Pounce is on the level of a class feat, where ancestry feats are typically a little below that.

I would have a hard time recommending the use of this third-party content because I would have to also send along...See more

Hey Tevis, thanks for your input!

I'm always taking feedback into consideration. Here's some thoughts on some of the content that you pointed out:

1) For Nine-Tailed Scion Dedication, the idea here is that you get the spells instead of skills. You get the one 1st-level spell slot sooner, but it doesn't grant you any of the other benefits any faster. And, for what it's worth, in Pathfinder Core Rulebook the basic spellcasting benefits note that they're "usually" gained at 1st-level, which implies rules-wise that there's some wiggle room for getting them sooner. All the archetype really does is cut out the need for a separate feat for basic benefits so it can ask you to take a feat for Legendary casting at 20th level. I'm currently playing this archetype in a home game and it hasn't been all that powerful, but your mileage may vary.

2) I have a hard time seeing Kitsune Guile as being OP, but I'm curious regarding your thoughts on it. To me, it's predicated on a critical...See more

As my GM is looking to implement this into our list of allowable sources for our AoA campaign there were a couple questions we had over some of the material:

Noh Mask of Draconic Shapes:
Is it intentional that the Breath Weapon doesn't have a listed 'cooldown' period? Offhand we've assumed 1d4 rounds as per the source dragons but this is our shot in the dark.

Currently the Imperial Dragons written (Forest, Sea, Sky, Sovereign, and Underworld) have their breath weapons only in Cones or Burst so was it intentional to only have choices between cones and lines? Along the same lines does the breath weapon template size remain the same regardless of which tier of the mask is used?

Noh Mask Master:

Do multiple mask of the same type share a cooldown with one another?
Example: Yuki uses 3 of their daily preparations to prepare 3 copies of "The Noh Mask of the Vulpinal,"...See more

Hi, thanks for purchasing this!

1) Breath Weapons from Noh Masks of draconic shapes should have a cooldown period of 1d4 rounds.

2) Imperial Dragons should be cones or lines, rather than cones or bursts.

3) Breath weapons don't get bigger based on the tier of the mask.

4) Noh masks in general don't "share a cooldown" with each other as you describe. Assuming that you're talking about the focus point for the mask of the vulpinal, each mask would have its own focus point and you could, if you wanted to, Interact to put on a mask, change shape, use the ability. Next round, change shape to your original form, interact to take the 1st mask off, interact to put the 2nd mask on. Round 3, change shape, use the ability, change shape to your original form. Round 4, Interact to take the 2nd mask off, Interact to put the 3rd mask on, Change Shape. Round 5, use the ability. It seems like a really poor use of action economy to me, personally, but you can absolutely...See more

Thank you for the replies!

The Noh mask question wasn't so much based around all the swaps occurring during combat for the reasons you pointed out of it being very poor action economy. Mostly it was centered around what a character could potentially do throughout the day with multiple combats.

Ah, then yes! If you want to have multiple vulpinal masks and swap 'em, they each have their own point.

There is an error on page 37, Leaping Pounce. It is labeled as a 9th level ancestry feat while being in the 5th level section. I am a fairly mechanics first person, so I apologize if it seems like I skipped all that nice lore stuff. I will be getting to it too. If I find more, then I will notify here.

This is a very nice book.

Thanks for the heads-up! I just put out an update that fixes Leaping Pounce to be a 5th level ancestry feat, as was intended.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
