Written by Alexander Augunas, Joan Hong, Dustin Knight, Ruvaid Virk, and Sky Mahpiya Wall

Living clandestinely among Golarion's ancestries, kitsune make formidable foes and canny heroes. Kitsune of Golarion unlocks the full potential of this ancestry, detailing kitsune from every corner of the globe. An expansion on Lost Omens Ancestry Guide penned by the same authors who pen the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the following is just some of the content you'll find within Kitsune of Golarion:

  • An in-depth look at kitsune ethnic groups from across Golarion, including Arcadia, Avistan, Tian Xia, Casmaron, Garund, and even the Crown of the World. Each ethnic group includes a detailed look at traditions and celebrations favored by those kitsune, as well as their culture, history, and shapechanging abilities.
  • Reforged Kitsune rules designed to adjust several kitsune ancestry abilities, feats, and heritages in order to smooth the player experience for kitsune PCs.
  • New heritages and ancestry feats for kitsune characters.
  • New worn magic items called noh masks that allow shapechangers to assume new forms.
  • New consumable items called foxbrews that invoke potent transmutations with a kick once their effects end.
  • Two new archetypes: the Noh Mask Master and the Kyubi Scion.
  • And much more!

Ouef.
I was looking over the older feats and I don't like the change to Startling Shapechange. Now it has to use deception instead of intimidation.

Am I interpreting the Nine Tailed Sion Archetype feat Fox Font correctly? It sounds like it gives up to 7 spells slots of the character's highest level. The spells you can cast with it are limited but they are spontaneous, and are all heightened to the highest level.

This seems maybe a little too good for just one feat? I can't think of another feat that adds that many spells of scaling high levels!

Like for 1st Edition Pathfinder?

The Dynastic Races Compendium's kitsune chapter, which I wrote for my company, Everybody Games, has sort of the "grand daddy" of Kitsune of Golarion in it. A lot of the specific content isn't there, but it's similar. If you bought this PDF for the Lore and DRC for the mechanics, you wouldn't have an EXACT conversion, but it would be something!

Questions about the reforged fox form. Are you allowed to use unarmed strikes from class feats in this form. The text says you lose access to unarmed strikes from “kitsune heritages and feats”. So the wording can be interpreted multiple ways.

Also does the reforged fox form still have the statistics of pest form. (Does it give you imprecise scent, weakness to physical damage etc.) the reforged fox form description never mentions it. If it doesn’t then the fox forms additional speed is incredibly potent with little drawback.

1. It's not intended that you can use unarmed strikes from class feats / features in fox form.

2. You do not use pest form rules or statistics. Pest form is honestly ill-suited for a fox, considering that foxes move faster than humans both IRL and in the rules of the game, but the spell limits you to 10 feet. The trade-off for the Speed boost is that you can't use weapons or held items, and none of your items are accessible in the form because they're merged into your body. Ultimately, if you're going to use one action to change shape for the boost and then Stride, it's still a net-loss movement-wise unless you're able to Stride three times. (Three strides normally for a kitsune is 75 feet, in fox form it would be 105 feet.) Which means you either need an ancestry feet to change shape as a single action (a feat cost that, to me, is fair and in line with similar options) or you need to spend two turns Striding and two actions Changing Shape for it to really be a benefit.

Your mileage may...See more

Hello, I love the flavour and options offered in the book. However, my GM has raised a concern regarding the Nine-Tails Scion Archetype. It gives, for the cost of a single feat, up to 10 1st level ancestry feats depending on heritage and if you use both official and infinite feats, up to 10 5th level, and up to 4 9th level.

Understandably, this seems like it gives too much. While these are ancestry feats, for the cost of a single feat you'd gain a lot of bonuses that by themselves are close or equal to some skill and general feats.

Is there a way to better balance this, while not taking away too much from the archetype?

Thanks for your time!

I'm not the author obviously, but I'm fairly sure what you're saying is not how that is supposed to work? The additional feats, all the kitsune ancestry feats, become available for you to take as class feats or archetype feats if you're using Free Archetype, you don't just get them at the listed levels. Like you can now spend basically every class feat you have after 2nd level to have a ton of ancestry feats, but that is just spending your resources you're still not getting all of them from one feat.

Are you referring to the Additional Feats entry of the Archetype? If so, that doesn't mean, "You get all this for free." It means that when you get a class feat (or a free archetype feat, if you're using that rule from the GameMastery Guide) you can pick one of those listed feats as an archetype feat.

So, for example, let's say I'm a 4th Level Rogue looking for a new feat. I have Nine-Tailed Scion Dedication, and if I wanted to I could pick one of the Feat 4 options in the book. Or, since every 1st level kitsune ancestry feat is an option, I could pick a 1st level kitsune ancestry feat instead of a class feat.

You're not getting anything for free, and I'm a little confused by that interpretation. If you and your GM are referring to something else, feel free to leave a reply and we can get to the bottom of it because the intention is not that you're not getting 10 feats for free for a single feat.

Yeah I was fairly new to the archetypes system and my GM didn't know either. It was just confusion over how the system worked. Thanks for the response.

Hi! These books are amazing, but I have two questions. As the Feats for Foxfire Adepts and Nine-Tailed Scions have the Kitsune trait, they're eligible for Ancestry Feat slots, I believe. Is this intended?
Second, in a Free Archetype + Ancestry Paragon Fists of the Ruby Phoenix campaign, what classes do you think would mesh with either or both Dedications best? I've been looking at Monk (both Scion and Adept) and Flurry Ranger (just Adept) so far, as both value switch hitting and AoE, and both have ways to utilize the now very usable Foxfire, though Monk obviously uses it better. My biggest issue is neither of those classes really do well with Charisma, but I still want to have good martial prowess. I'd like to use the Foxfire in melee range at times, which I think I can do just fine as long as I have some way to avoid AoOs.

Thanks for your time!

1. I'm actually not sure, regarding the trait. It won't break your game if you take them as ancestry feats, but they weren't intended as such. As far as I could find reading through the rules, having an ancestry trait doesn't mean that it's an ancestry feat. But if we can find some specific rulings, that'd be great! Worse to worse, I need to update the book with all those traits removed.

2. I'm currently playing both archetypes on a mastermind rogue in my boyfriend's campaign, and it's been a blast! I use Mastermind to make my enemies flat-footed against my foxfire and do big foxfire sneak attacks using Automatic Knowledge and Analyze Weakness. Being able to use Modular Foxfire to change my damage type has been VERY helpful, and I love having utility spells to help the party. I think monk is going to be a great fit for Fist of the Ruby Phoenix, but I could also see going Ranger, taking the Foxfire option that gives it the agile trait, and pairing that with Ranger's Flurry. Shooting Star Magus...See more

A follow-up on this, Cynthia. When Pathfinder Player Core comes out with the Remastered project, I'll be releasing Kitsune of Golarion Remastered. In this book, archetype feats like the ones you mentioned won't have the kitsune trait anymore, but their dedication feats will note that they count towards the maximum number of tails you could have. You can use that rule as an errata in the meantime.

I like a lot of what's in here, especially the reforging of Kitsune's Change Shape, since the Paizo version is very lacking.

However some of the options are flatly superior in power to official content, especially the Nine-tailed Scion Archetype, which grants the benefits of a spellcasting dedication and the basic spellcasting benefits in a single second level dedication feat, and allows access to Expert spellcasting at level 10 instead of 12.

As a GM, I'm always wary of third-party content for exactly this reason: there is very nice, balanced, and flavorful material in this pdf, but sprinkled throughout are options that introduce a good bit of power creep.

Kitsune Guile and Startling Shapechange are pretty over-the-top in power level as well. Leaping Pounce is on the level of a class feat, where ancestry feats are typically a little below that.

I would have a hard time recommending the use of this third-party content because I would have to also send along...See more

Hey Tevis, thanks for your input!

I'm always taking feedback into consideration. Here's some thoughts on some of the content that you pointed out:

1) For Nine-Tailed Scion Dedication, the idea here is that you get the spells instead of skills. You get the one 1st-level spell slot sooner, but it doesn't grant you any of the other benefits any faster. And, for what it's worth, in Pathfinder Core Rulebook the basic spellcasting benefits note that they're "usually" gained at 1st-level, which implies rules-wise that there's some wiggle room for getting them sooner. All the archetype really does is cut out the need for a separate feat for basic benefits so it can ask you to take a feat for Legendary casting at 20th level. I'm currently playing this archetype in a home game and it hasn't been all that powerful, but your mileage may vary.

2) I have a hard time seeing Kitsune Guile as being OP, but I'm curious regarding your thoughts on it. To me, it's predicated on a critical...See more

As my GM is looking to implement this into our list of allowable sources for our AoA campaign there were a couple questions we had over some of the material:

Noh Mask of Draconic Shapes:
Is it intentional that the Breath Weapon doesn't have a listed 'cooldown' period? Offhand we've assumed 1d4 rounds as per the source dragons but this is our shot in the dark.

Currently the Imperial Dragons written (Forest, Sea, Sky, Sovereign, and Underworld) have their breath weapons only in Cones or Burst so was it intentional to only have choices between cones and lines? Along the same lines does the breath weapon template size remain the same regardless of which tier of the mask is used?

Noh Mask Master:

Do multiple mask of the same type share a cooldown with one another?
Example: Yuki uses 3 of their daily preparations to prepare 3 copies of "The Noh Mask of the Vulpinal,"...See more

Hi, thanks for purchasing this!

1) Breath Weapons from Noh Masks of draconic shapes should have a cooldown period of 1d4 rounds.

2) Imperial Dragons should be cones or lines, rather than cones or bursts.

3) Breath weapons don't get bigger based on the tier of the mask.

4) Noh masks in general don't "share a cooldown" with each other as you describe. Assuming that you're talking about the focus point for the mask of the vulpinal, each mask would have its own focus point and you could, if you wanted to, Interact to put on a mask, change shape, use the ability. Next round, change shape to your original form, interact to take the 1st mask off, interact to put the 2nd mask on. Round 3, change shape, use the ability, change shape to your original form. Round 4, Interact to take the 2nd mask off, Interact to put the 3rd mask on, Change Shape. Round 5, use the ability. It seems like a really poor use of action economy to me, personally, but you can absolutely...See more

Thank you for the replies!

The Noh mask question wasn't so much based around all the swaps occurring during combat for the reasons you pointed out of it being very poor action economy. Mostly it was centered around what a character could potentially do throughout the day with multiple combats.

Ah, then yes! If you want to have multiple vulpinal masks and swap 'em, they each have their own point.

There is an error on page 37, Leaping Pounce. It is labeled as a 9th level ancestry feat while being in the 5th level section. I am a fairly mechanics first person, so I apologize if it seems like I skipped all that nice lore stuff. I will be getting to it too. If I find more, then I will notify here.

This is a very nice book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
